Uganda Boxing Federation President Muhangi Kicked Into Jail Over ‘Forgery’

By Frank Kamuntu

Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President Moses Muhangi has been arrested following allegations of forgery.

The official was held after he allegedly “failed to justify the authenticity of receipts showing expenditures”.

His arrest came after he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee and was asked to write a statement on alleged forged documents and false accountability, reports say.

“Loopholes” have allegedly been found in the UBF’s accounts.

Reports have it that the receipts involved were worth more than UGX3 million (£650/$805/€745).

Muhangi had been kept at the Central Police Station in Kampala.

He is known as a supporter of International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev, and welcomed the Russian to Uganda in December.

The two men discussed building a boxing academy in Uganda, with Muhangi saying Kremlev’s visit was a “big achievement” for the country.

In July, Muhangi challenged for the African Boxing Confederation Presidency which would have earned him a place on the IBA Board.

However, he was defeated by Cameroon’s Bertrand Mendouga.

In a fraught race, Muhangi accused Mendouga of ruling Cameroon’s National Federation with “an iron fist”.

Sarah Babirye Kityo, the President of the Ugandan Netball Federation, has also previously been arrested on allegations of obtaining money by false pretences.

She was remanded to Luzira Prison.
