In another terrible gun incident, a police officer has shot dead a UPDF soldier in Mbarara, Swift Daily News has learnt.

According to reports, the shooting occurred inside Mbarara Police barracks involving a Police Field Force Unit officer and a UPDF soldier. Concerned security personnel are yet to release a statement on this matter.

Police has since sealed off the crime scene.

This incident occurs at a time when the public is raising concerns about gun violence in Uganda. Just the day before, a security guard allegedly shot dead at Lumumba Avenue making a total of six people who have been silenced by guns in one month including a murder by shooting of Col Charles Okello Engola, the Deputy Minister for Gender and Labour, who was killed by his security guard few weeks ago.

In the 2022 police annual crime report, Kampala Metropolitan North registered the highest number of murders by shooting within the city, registering 19 cases, followed by KMP East with 10 cases, while KMP South registered 8 cases.

Some of the killings have been blamed on elements linked to the Islamic extremist Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group. Others were either targeted attacks or simply the consequence of violent crime.
