Innovation: Ugandan Youths Invent Solar Powered Pest Control Artificial Intelligence Machine

By Frank Kamuntu

In a game-changing development for the agricultural industry, Green Safety Inventors Limited started by visionary CEO Hillary Nahurira, has unveiled a revolutionary solar-powered pest control machine that leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to protect crops from pests and diseases.

Nahurira Hillary, a graduate with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture majoring in Crop Science works together with a team of fellow scientists including Mujurizi Frank a graduate of Mechanical Engineering, Nuwampire Ebon and a graduate of software engineering.

According to the inventors of this machine, it also saves farmers’ time, preserves the environment, and boosts harvests and household incomes.

This groundbreaking technology has since garnered praise from farmers cultivating grains, fruits, and vegetables, who are witnessing remarkable improvements in their agricultural practices.

The brain behind this machine Mr Nahurira says the machine combines cutting-edge AI algorithms and IoT connectivity to provide an unparalleled level of crop protection.

He adds that the machine is equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, and the device continuously monitors fields, identifying pest activity and gauging the severity of infestations. ”It then deploys targeted measures, ensuring effective pest control while minimizing harm to beneficial organisms.”

He further explains about this technology, “Our solar-powered pest control machine harnesses the potential of AI and IoT to revolutionize crop protection. By enabling real-time monitoring and intelligent response, we empower farmers to take proactive measures and safeguard their crops without relying on harmful chemicals.”

Some of the farmers already using this machine include Sarah Mugumya a maize farmer from Ntungamo who says, “With the solar-powered pest control machine, I no longer have to spend hours manually inspecting my maize fields for pests. The AI-powered system does the work for me, alerting me to potential threats and taking swift action. Not only has it saved me valuable time, but my crop yields have also increased significantly.”

Kato Joel, a cassava farmer from Isingiro district, highlights the positive impact on his harvests, stating, “Since I implemented the solar-powered pest control machine, my cassava plants have thrived. The device detects pests early and deploys targeted deterrents, ensuring my crops remain healthy and pest-free. I’ve witnessed a remarkable improvement in both quality and quantity, leading to increased profits.”

Not only the above, Ankunda Jovan, an apple farmer from Kabale district testifies, “The solar-powered pest control machine has been a game-changer for my apple orchard. It not only protects my crops from pests but also helps me optimize my spraying regimen. The result is healthier trees, higher-quality fruit, and improved market value.”
