Victoria University’s Bukyana Named IGAD-ICEPCVE Peace Ambassador

By Frank Kamuntu

In what could be a first in the media industry, journalist and communications expert Julius Bukyana has been named as an IGAD peace ambassador.

Bukyana was named by the Intergovernmental Agency on Development (IGAD) a peace ambassador to help in countering violent extremism in digital spaces. Bukyana will be tasked with preventing and stamping out violent extremism which many youth are exposed to once they go online.

The appointment comes after several months of intense training in Mombasa, Kenya.

Bukyana is Victoria University’s Corporate and Public Affairs Manager who has been vocal about the need for promoting and protecting the voices of the youth in media and governance. Bukyana has repeatedly argued that for East Africa to take a leading position on the continent, it will need to harness its growing youthful population.

Before his 2023 appointment as the Victoria University spokesperson, Bukyana had enjoyed a storied career as a television journalist. He is credited as being one of the leading faces on NBS Television who spearheaded its renaissance in the 2018-2020 era as it rapidly expanded its reach.

Not content with just reporting on newsmakers, Bukyana stunned the media fraternity by coming close to winning a slot in the East African Parliament as a youth MP in the 2021 elections.

It is expected that this drive and youthful energy will soon see Bukyana revitalize the role of IGAD-ICEPCVE peace ambassador.
