An alleged South Sudan military trainer Kenneth Nkurunungi is in the custody of the Ugandan police after being found in possession fake US dollars, worth 40,000.
Reports have it that the suspect was arrested in Namayiba Bus terminal in old Kampala during an operation led by old Kampala police.
Nkurunungi is said to have retired from the Uganda People’s Defense Forrces (UPDF) as a soldier in 2008.
“Nkurunungi, a resident of Rukungiri had returned to Uganda for a vacation on August 19, 2023 with plans to return to Juba on September 19, 2023 but extended his stay,” stated Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson.
“The suspect claimed that the package of counterfeit currency was intended to be transport to Juba through classic bus, it was alleged that he was contacted by Musa Adam, a resident of Juba, who on October 12, 2023, instructed Nkurungi to meet an unknown individual in town who would provide him with the package,” he added
The police added that the exchange happened close to Total Katwe, near to BMK House, where Nkurunugi received the sealed box and proceeded with it to Namayba Bus terminal, where he gave it to classic bus staff before living.
Before leaving, Nkurunungi was called back to retrieve the box which prompted his arrest, because of the alleged money seen in the box.
“Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the money in the box was counterfeit black dollars valued of $40,000. Police are actively investigating this case and further detail, will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the police added.
