National Water and Sewage Corporation (NWSC) in Lyantonde district has alerted it’s customers to be extra vigilant against fraudsters, scammers and exortionists especially during this forthcoming festive season.
Michael Agaba, the Area Field Officer at Lyantonde NWSC Branch revealed that while billing in the field this week, one of the customers reported to him that she had been charged 70,000shs by unknown person who claimed to be working with NWSC.
“After the extortion, the perpetuator was identified immediately and police started tracing him until it netted him in the neighbouring Rakai district,” said Agaba.
ASP Kiwanuka Douglas, the Lyantonde OC Police Station said that they were notified by the Manager NWSC Lyantonde Branch and immediately started an operation that ended with a one Alex Nathan Mugerwa behind coolers.
“The suspect is a resident of Burenga Kyikaya in Kampala. We have already opened a case of impersonation and forgery against him under ref no. 31/25/10/2023,” said ASP Kiwanuka.
Sources have it that the suspect obtained alot of money from clients which he was arrested with and taken to police as exhibits.
This is not the first time NWSC Lyantonde Branch is registering cases of extortion, two years ago cases of impersonation and obtainance of money by false pretense from NWSC clients in Lyantonde district were on rise.
Andrew Ahumuza the Lyantonde NWSC Branch manager alerted clients and the general public to be vigilant during this coming festive season, noting that they should use the right systems that were put in place for paying bills like banks and mobile money to avoid succumbing to games of fraudsters.
“We also humbly request our clients to always first inquire from our office or any responsible personnel before paying to scammers,” Ahumuza cautioned.
