Arua City Engineer Arrested For Embezzlement Of Ugx28m Road Fund

By Frank Kamuntu

This week State House Anti Corruption Unit working with Uganda Police arrested Omona Charles, the Arua City Engineer for embezzling over UGX28 million from the Uganda Road Fund, meant to rehabilitate roads in Arua City.

It’s alleged that during the month of June 2023, the suspect and others still at large irregularly processed and transferred over UGX56 million shillings from the Arua City’s Treasury single account to the imprest account and withdrew it in cash.

The said money is alleged to have been handed over to the Engineer to pay service providers who did some road works, and maintenance of Works department vehicles, which was not done.

The suspect, Omona Charles, claimed he used part of the money to solve his domestic problems, leaving parts of the roads in bad conditions.

SH-ACU was established under Article 99(4) of the constitution of Uganda, which gives the President executive powers to either directly or indirectly perform his duties or through officers subordinate to him.
