2024 Rankings: 15 Most Militarily Powerful African Countries

The rankings use 60 individual factors to determine each country’s military strength, applying categories ranging from number of military units to financial status and logistical capabilities.

The Global Firepower website, which tracks defense-related information, has released its 2024 edition of the World Military Strength Ranking.

Here are the 15 strongest African countries:
1.Egypt (15th);
2.Algeria (26th);
3.South Africa (33rd);
4.Nigeria (39th);
5.Ethiopia (49th);
6.Angola (55th);
7.Morocco (61st);
8.DR Congo (73rd);
9.Tunisia (74th);
10.Sudan (76th);
11.Libya (79th);
12.Kenya (89th);
13.Mozambique (92nd);
14.Zambia (97th);
15.Côte d’Ivoire (98th).

The United Kingdom, previously ranked fifth, is now ranked sixth, while France is not in the top ten at all this year and is ranked 11th, just ahead of Brazil, Indonesia and Iran.

Russia continues to lead in the number of tanks, self-propelled artillery systems, and towed artillery guns.

Also, this year, Russia took the lead in the number of ships in its navy. China ranked second in this indicator, North Korea took bronze, the US was fourth, and Sweden rounded out the top five.

Among African countries, Algeria, ranked 14th overall, Egypt (22nd) and Nigeria (24th) are the leaders in the number of vessels in the fleet.

In 2024, the armies of Suriname, Moldova, and Somalia were named the weakest in the world by Global Firepower.
