Kampala, Entebbe: Kenya’s retired president Uhuru Kenyatta was in Uganda on Wednesday, January 24, to meet host President Yoweri Museveni.

Part of their engagements was on the state of the process toward peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where the M23 rebels have been facing off with the government troops, leading to a humanitarian crisis.

State House Uganda explained that Uhuru showed up to brief Museveni on the talks.

“The facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process, H.E. President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta, briefed H.E Kaguta Museveni on the progress of the ongoing efforts to restore peace in Eastern DRC,” said Sandor Walusimbi, the senior press secretary to Museveni.

Uhuru branched to Uganda while returning to Nairobi from Kinshasha, where he had graced the inauguration of President Felix Tshisekedi, who was re-elected to lead the DRC -for his second term after garnering a dominant 73.47% of the vote, routing his main opposition opponent Moise Katumbi who secured a paltry 18.08%- in the general election held in December 2023.

This would be Uhuru’s second meeting with Museveni over the eastern DRC matter.

In August last year, he called on the veteran Ugandan leader at the Entebbe State House, where they deliberated on the state of security in the vast mineral-rich country.

“Besides the security situation in the East African Community (EAC) region, the two leaders deliberated on the ongoing Peace Processes geared towards the realization of a lasting peace and stability in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Uhuru’s office said.
