A wedding DJ will have to remain behind bars for 14 weeks after he was found guilty of urinating on the back of a cancer patient at a public toilet.
Kelly Rivers, prosecuting, said the DJ, Leigh Brookfield, went to the toilet on Boxing Day 2023 at Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club, where he started charting the 70-year-old Peter Barton.
According to the Guardian, after Barton revealed to Brookfield his cancer diagnosis, the DJ urinated on him as he secretly took video footage, which he later shared on social platforms.
“Peter Barton was at the urinal when Leigh Brookfield started speaking to him. Barton was telling him he had been unwell due to a cancer diagnosis, and the defendant proceeded to urinate on his back. He filmed himself urinating and posted the footage on Snapchat, and it began to go viral,” Rivers explained.
Barton learned of the incident a day later, when he returned to the club, only to be informed of the viral video clip by his friends.
He said that he became emotional, as he never thought that somebody could do such to any person.
“When I saw this video, I cried. I couldn’t believe someone would do that to another person. I just feel that his actions were disgusting,” said Barton.
Admitting the assault, Brookfield apologized and blamed alcohol for his behavior.
“It’s just something me and the boys do when we are drunk and until watching the video back, I didn’t realize that the nice gentleman next to me was going through health problems,” he claimed.
However, District Judge Mark Layton ruled that he should be jailed for 14 weeks besides paying the victim £500 compensation, costs of £85 and a £154 surcharge.
“Mr. Barton engaged you in a polite conversation, telling you he had prostate cancer.” He said most people would have responded with “kind words and sympathy” but Brookfield instead urinated on his back and “uploaded it to Snapchat for all to see,” he ruled.
Moreover, the club management imposed a permanent ban on the DJ.
In other news, a man from Nairobi pleaded with the court to convict him as he never wanted to engage in criminal offences such as stealing.
He told the court that life had become unbearable and that being in jail would save him since the state would be feeding him at the prison.
“Please allow me to be jailed and live. I would rather stay in there and have food because I have tried taking my life, and it is not good. I just want to be charged and taken inside. I will cooperate with the prison officers,” he said.
