Bad blood is flowing between businessman Ben Kavuya and state minister for lands Hon Sam Mayanja over a multibillion land saga in Lyantonde district, Swift News reports exclusively.
It all started earlier this month when Minister Mayanja ordered the arrest of Kavuya over alleged involvement in land wrangles in Lyantonde district that have since left innocent wanainchi in tears, others counting sleepless nights.
Minister’s directive to arrest Kavuya was triggered by the outcry of the ‘oppressed’ residents, who told the Minister that the businessman connives with the security forces in the area to harass them. Residents further revealed that Kavuya connived with the Lyantonde RDC Mr. Mbetegyereize Godfrey, a one Robert Nuwandinda and illegally arrested one of their own, whom they then transferred to Masaka Police without clear charges.
Further, the Hon Minister was informed that Kavuya was using the RDC with the help of police to forcefully evict tenants from their land to establish cattle ranches, allegations the RDC say are not true, calling it ‘blackmail and hate’.
“Ben Kavuuya is a rich man in Kampala, everyone knows about him. But why do you use your wealth to make people suffer?” wondered the minister. “I am therefore ordering the arrest of Kavuya wherever he is seen. This kind of torture of innocent people cannot be allowed under President Museveni’s regime,” Minister Mayanja said in a meeting held on 2nd February 2024 in Katovu Trading Centre, in Lwengo district.
However, the above didn’t leave Kavuya and his colleague Nuwandinda at peace, they have since threatened to sue the Minister and ‘milk’ Ugx3b and Ugx2b respectively from him.
Kavuya and Nuwandinda through their lawyers of Byenkya, Kihika & Co. advocates issued a demand notice and a notice to sue the minister saying in the above-mentioned meeting with residents, he [Mayanja] uttered false and defamatory statements against them.
It’s worth noting that the contested land between residents and Kavuya measures 3.5 square miles. It is located in Lyantonde district at Kategengera A, Karambi Parish, Kaliro Sub-county. Kavuya claims that he bought this land in 1994 from Banyarwanda Bibanja holders.
He says the sellers allegedly made consent to sign for him in case he wanted it trimmed from the main title but in 2004 when he attempted to acquire a title and demarcate the said land, his request was objected to by the very people he bought it from and this is where the battle began from.
