US President Joe Biden finally joined TikTok on Sunday, debuting with a 26-second video.
The move follows intense US government criticism of the video-sharing network in recent years, primarily from Republicans but also from the Biden administration.
TikTok is owned by Chinese corporation ByteDance and has been accused by a large number of US politicians of being a propaganda weapon utilized by Beijing, something the company categorically rejects.
In a video shared Sunday on the @bidenhq campaign account, the 81-year-old Democratic president jokes about everything from politics to the NFL championship game.
When asked which he prefers, the Super Bowl or its legendary half-time spectacle, this year hosted by singer Usher, he chooses to watch the game itself.
When asked if there is a secret plot to rig the game so that pop sensation Taylor Swift, who is dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, might utilize her celebrity to endorse Biden, the president jokes about the baseless right-wing conspiracy idea.
“I’d get in trouble if I told you,” he said.
A number of individual states and the federal government have prohibited the software from being used on official government devices due to worries about security.
“It appears now that the idea of a ban was being pushed more to make political points than as a serious effort to legislate,” David Greene, a civil rights barrister, recently told British publication The Guardian.
As the election approaches, the platform serves as a gateway to young voters.
Sunday’s video concludes with the president being asked who he prefers: himself or Republican contender Donald Trump.
“Are you kidding?” He laughs. “Biden.”
