We Focus On Skills Dev’t Not Mere Grades: Victoria University Announces UBTEB Accredited Certificate Programmes

By Frank Kamuntu

The mighty Victoria University Kampala, has announced that soon they are launching highly practical and hands-on UBTEB-accredited certificate programmes focused on skill development and practical knowledge.

The above exciting news has been confirmed via its X handle, noting thus; ”We have identified a pressing issue: Many students’ futures are compromised by financial hurdles or an educational emphasis on grades over competencies at O & A’level. Some students graduate from certain universities, with no skills to navigate the world of work. To address this, we are launching highly practical and hands-on UBTEB-accredited certificate programmes focused on skill development and practical knowledge.”

For long, the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Lawrence Muganga has critiqued the current mode of education where much emphasis is put on how many aggregates/grades a student scores instead of skills and experience acquired.

Victoria University says the new programmes will not only prepare students for immediate employment but also offer pathways to further education, including diploma and degree courses.

”They are also ideal for graduates seeking to enhance their skill set. By emphasizing hands-on training, we aim to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the skills demanded by the job market, contributing significantly to reducing unemployment in our country. Thanks to Prof. Lawrence Muganga for the advice,” noted the University management.

Among the certificates under this UBTEB program include;

  1.  Certificate in Hotel and Institutional Catering

  2. Certificate in Clearing and Forwarding

  3. Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality Management

  4. Certificate in Journalism and Media Studies

  5. Certificate in Computer Engineering Certificate in Software Engineering Certificate in Agriculture

Victoria University is a distinctive player focusing on new opportunities to serve the new generation by transforming higher education systems to meet the emerging challenges of the times and the future by going beyond conventional approaches.

Prof Muganga says, this University offers an education that is tailored to equip all students with world-class knowledge but also hands-on skills that are lacking in most graduates of today.

The University offers a Work Integrated Learning Programme which places students in a natural working environment as part of the curriculum for every course hosted at this University.

Upon admission, Victoria University starts with the Career Readiness and Employability Programme, and students later join the Work Integrated Learning stage, where students are sent to various companies, schools, and industries to fit in the real world of work, even before graduation, with no hassle.

This University, which is now the leading in Uganda stands out as a pivot of academic excellence, offering a fresh and intellectually thriving environment that nurtures critical and progressive thinkers and pushes pedagogical boundaries.

The University is centrally located in the heart of Kampala City and on the main public transportation routes coupled with ample parking space.
