As Romans 12:19 says “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God for it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay says the Lord.” This scripture resonates well with the recent an ongoing parliamentary exhibition against members of parliament with the Speaker Right Honorable Anita Annette Among receiving a barrage of the attacks, scorn and ridicule from a section of exhibitors Dr. Spire Sentongo and Journalist Agathe Atuhaire .and the opposition members. They have used all manners of foul language including name calling and hate speech forgetting that this is our number three in political hierarchy of Uganda and hence indicating a gap in training on patriotism lessons.
I have been in Kenya for some time and these people always love their country and leaders and they are careful in most of their statements while trying to question the excesses of their leaders. However, Ugandans both here in Uganda and abroad haven’t relented in portraying their country and leaders to outsiders in weird way. Indeed, there has been accusations and prosecutions of the Speaker and the institution she leads without relent as if they are undressing someone from planet mass. Indeed, this has shown that if patriotism leaders do not amplify their voice on patriotism and conducting more lessons then the country is headed in the wrong direction with the crop of the current generation of the youth whose statement defies logic and critical thinking.
It is so disheartening to note that even the high leaders have engaged in these talks aimed at disgracing the lovely speaker instead of addressing their grievances in right platforms like courts of law. Some of this information in exhibition isn’t accurate as there are accredited acceptable documents like reports that should be based on by higher politicians while arguing their cases but have all fallen prey to the power of social media. Indeed, they have strangled her even without listening to her side and this has made her develop a hard skin to absorb those attacks. Hence, they will not get the right answers due to their approach that is interested in lynching a leader even when the available evidence is questionable.
For starters, Anita Among should be applauded looking at how she has scaled up her political ladders since she entered the parliament until now when she is occupying the third highest office on the land. She has been phenomenal becoming a speaker in just her second term in parliament meaning she is not ordinary person who has ticked her boxes right. Therefore, whether she as made a mistake or not, the approach is foul and intended to undermine her leadership and personality to serve her nation. There is high level of people portraying hate speech to her and I feel she need to be given a break because she is a believer in God having been seen with the Pope. Therefore, disgracing our leaders shouldn’t be a way of conducting activism as it has given ground to those who hate her outside for having steered legislation against LGBTQ+ and this has given leverage to those people to amplify voices that have been disgracing her in the media instead of leaving the work to God the Almighty to deal with her if they feel she has a case to answer.
Our speaker isn’t aloof because she is always seen interacting with people of all walks of life and he rise to one of the most coveted offices has attracted attacks from these haters but it is important to note that you cannot fight to get what is not yours and hence she should be given a break to execute her mandate. Normally, social media tend to portray things that are sugar coated as truth and since the onslaught on social media isn’t highly controlled, them this lady needs the support of all right-thinking people instead of lynching her. This gives me more reasons to stand with her in this period where she is experiencing harsh criticism in her time.
She has shown how to handle business in the most effective way looking at the different legislations passed under her stewardship. She has been effective and doing the right things despite the skeptics that existed questioning her capacity to steer the august house. She has demonstrated soberness and firmness of the highest degree. Media lynching of high office occupants should be limited because they cannot solve problems. The office of the speaker receives a budget allocation suitable for the third office therefore, witch-hunting her on allegations of corruption is unfair.
She has demonstrated her love for her country and commitment to work with her developments in her home area where she has constructed schools and hospitals in a short time to uplift the standards of people as compared to her predecessors. She has been seen helping vulnerable people and even members of parliament have been appreciating her in her role of mentoring her. Therefore, this hatred to her and disgracing her is a thing of the past where negative energy mattered as compared to the power of positive thinking. The government spokespersons should come to defend national leaders instead of being bystanders when their honor is being destroyed into pieces.
The role of the Right Honorable Speaker cannot be underrated as she has been a great cadre for the President taking on critical roles in parliament that were left for the Head of State but she has made her contribution to the political landscape of Uganda written well in black and white. Her role in Pamoja bid when Uganda won the ticket to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027 isn’t underrated and she should be supported and developed further so that she can contribute immensely to Uganda compared to former leaders who survived on bragging about the number of years they have served not the accomplishments they have made like the Right Honorable Speaker Nalongo Anita Among. God bless the Speaker and give her courage to continue her work despite the several haters and distractions in her line of duty.
