Police authorities in Kabale District, western Uganda, are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 47-year-old Master’s degree student. Gloria Uwimana, a resident of Kamukira cell in Kirigime ward, Southern Division of Kabale Municipality, was discovered hanging lifeless in her shop on a fateful Saturday.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, the tragic sequence of events unfolded as follows: Early in the morning, around 6 a.m., Uwimana informed her husband, Emmanuel Arineitwe, that she needed to complete and submit some coursework. Given her status as a master’s degree student at Uganda Martyrs University, Arineitwe trusted her explanation.
However, when Arineitwe woke up later at 8:40 a.m., he noticed her eyeglasses and mobile phone left behind in the sitting room. Their daughter informed him that Uwimana had already left for her shop.
The situation took a grim turn when Augustine Muwanika, the head teacher of Child Africa, called Arineitwe to deliver the devastating news of his wife’s death. Uwimana had been found hanging in her shop, prompting the police to be notified.
Her body was subsequently taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, which confirmed that she had taken her own life.
ASP Maate expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional counseling services rather than resorting to such drastic measures. The lack of emotional intelligence, particularly among young couples in Uganda, is believed to exacerbate marital misunderstandings and lead to devastating consequences.
