Dr. Tom Okurut, the former executive director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), has left an indelible mark on Uganda’s environmental landscape. His recent passing on Sunday afternoon at Platinum Hospital, Nakasero, Kampala, after undergoing brain surgery, has left a void in the hearts of many who admired and respected his dedication to environmental preservation.
Dr. Okurut’s tenure at NEMA, spanning from 2011 until his departure after a decade of service, was characterized by unwavering commitment and tireless efforts to safeguard Uganda’s natural resources. He spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development and conserving the environment for future generations.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Okurut was a staunch advocate for the protection of Teso region’s ecological integrity, recognizing its significance not only for the local communities but also for the entire country. His contributions to the development of Teso are immeasurable, and his legacy will endure through the environmental policies and projects he championed.
Beyond Teso, Dr. Okurut’s influence extended nationwide, earning him recognition as a formidable force in the fight for environmental conservation. His leadership was instrumental in shaping NEMA’s strategies and policies, driving progress towards a greener and more sustainable Uganda.
