The sad news landing on our desk indicates that Victoria University’s former Chancellor, Dr. Martin Jerome Okec Aliker has died at 95.
Dr. Martin was a senior citizen, a celebrated Ugandan dental surgeon, businessman, entrepreneur, and community leader. He was also a senior presidential adviser and has sat on the board of directors of nearly forty Ugandan companies.
The news has been confirmed by the Victoria University Vice Chancellor, Prof Lawrence Muganga via his socials describing the deceased as someone who served with full dedication.
”With profound sadness, the @VUKampala family mourns the loss of our former Chancellor, Dr. Martin Jerome Okec Aliker. Dr. Aliker also had the foresight to establish the first Black-owned dental practice in Kampala. We will forever remember and cherish his dedication to our institution and his remarkable service to our nation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We will forever cherish his contributions. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Prof Muganga posted on his X handle.Â

Dr. Aliker brand reflected a professional and hard-working individual who excelled in all walks of life- a distinguished scholar, influential business leader and entrepreneurial mentor. He was a person whose name rang a bell of dedicated service with impeccable integrity, and proven business acumen which made him one of the richest men in Uganda.
Dr. Martin Jerome Okec Aliker was an ardent student right from Gulu High School to Kings College Budo. The lad who stood out from amongst his peers from the rolling hills of Acholiland excelled at Kings College Budo to enter Makerere College in 1948. He got a scholarship to the prestigious Northwestern University, Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Political Science. Earning a Fulbright Fellowship at Northwestern University, Aliker graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery and later became a Fellow of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of the United Kingdom.
