Champions League Battle As Arsenal Travel To Munich & Man City Host Real Madrid

By Frank Kamuntu

It could be a historic night in the Champions League as a record that has stood since the 03/04 season on the verge of being broken ahead of Bayern Munich vs Arsenal and Man City vs Real Madrid.

This year’s quarter-finals have exceeded all expectations with last night’s ties constantly seeing the pendulum swing between the sides involved.

Despite both heading into the second leg behind on aggregate, it was Borussia Dortmund and PSG who secured their place in the Champions League semi-final at the expense of Spanish giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona will be particularly bitter about their exit with manager Xavi naming the referee a ‘disaster’ following the red card handed to Ronald Araujo which completely switched the tie.

PSG went on to score four goals following the defender’s dismissal. Those four goals could end up being crucial as we could see a historic Champions League record broken tonight.

If there are at least two goals in tonight’s second legs this round will become the highest-scoring Champions League quarter-final round of all time, beating the 03/04 season.

There has been 29 goals scored so far with two games to play, and if either game is anything like the first leg the record of 30 looks set to be smashed.

Here are the quarter-final scores from the record-holding season which included some rather surprising sides:

  1. Real Madrid 5-5 Monaco
  2. Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal
  3. Porto 4-2 Lyon
  4. Deportivo 5-4 AC Milan
The 03/04 campaign was one of the most iconic we’ve seen during the Champions League era as it saw Jose Mourinho burst onto the scene with Porto who sensationally won the trophy.

Mourinho’s Porto side beat Monaco in the final 3-0, kickstarting the Portuguese manager’s career which has seen him become the only manager to win all three current UEFA European trophies.

Arsenal travel to Munich at 2-2, while City host Real Madrid with the scores level at 3-3.
