Two police officers assigned to Lusha Police Post in Lusha Sub-county, Bulambuli District, have been remanded to Mutufu Prisons in Sironko District on charges related to gun theft.
The officers involved are Sergeant Wilson Weere, who serves as the In-Charge of Lusha Police, and Corporal Henry Mangusha.
On Tuesday, they appeared before Bulambuli District Grade One Magistrate Annet Namankati, who ordered their remand until May 9, 2024.
Sgt. Weere faces two counts: theft of a firearm and neglect of duty. Meanwhile, Corporal Mangusha is charged with two counts of failing to properly secure a firearm and neglect of duty.
Earlier, there were rumors that Sgt. Weere had used the gun as collateral for a loan of Shs700,000 from a local money lender known only as Sande.
“The gun was presented as collateral by Sgt. Weere to Sande. However, we intervened and recovered the firearm,” said an anonymous local leader from Bulambuli District.
Elgon Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika clarified that if the suspects are found guilty, they will bear individual responsibility. He emphasized that the gun was not officially mortgaged as collateral.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Sgt. Weere conspired with unidentified individuals to steal a gun from Corporal Mangusha’s home for reasons yet unknown.
“Cpl. Mangusha took the firearm from the police post and left it at his residence, where it was subsequently stolen. According to our findings, Sgt. Weere was aware of the situation,” Taitika stated.
Elgon Regional Police Commander John Otim Bosco revealed that the SMG Rifle, along with approximately 30 rounds of ammunition, was recovered on April 23, 2024, in Lusha Sub-county, Bulambuli District.
“We collaborated with members of the public to recover the gun, suspecting that it might have been taken away by nearby individuals,” he explained.
