Security Forces Neutralize Four Deadly Explosives In Kampala, ‘Terrorists’ Take Off!

By Frank Kamuntu

Joint security forces successfully neutralized four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) discovered in a rented house in Kwata Zone, Komamboga, Kawempe division, Kampala.

The IEDs were found during the early hours of Saturday morning after vigilant locals reported suspicious individuals who had recently rented a single-room house in the area.

“The neighbors observed these strangers arriving with luggage to rent the house. They promptly alerted security, leading to immediate action and the cordoning off of the premises,” stated Brigadier Felix Kulayigye, UPDF spokesperson.

According to separate reports, the suspects rented the house but left their belongings behind before departing.

The landlord grew suspicious when the new tenants failed to return to the house for sleep, prompting the security alert.

By 7 a.m. on Saturday, various security agencies, including the Police bomb squad, Special Forces Command, JAAT, and operatives from the Defence and Intelligence Security (formerly known as CMI), led by Major General James Birungi, had assembled at the scene.

Inside the single-room house, investigators discovered a small mattress and several items, including three metallic casings containing three IEDs. A fourth IED was found in a bucket.

Additionally, three feature phones were connected to two cells, along with a pistol magazine.

Brigadier Kulayigye explained that the IEDs were interconnected in a series. The phone was intended to receive commands from the individual controlling the operation. Once triggered, the explosives would detonate sequentially.

The metallic casings were designed to act as fragments upon detonation, further enhancing the destructive impact of the devices.

An explosive device is considered an IED when any or all of the following — explosive ingredient, initiation, triggering or detonation mechanism, delivery system — is modified in any respect from its original expressed or intended function.

An IED’s components may incorporate any or all of military-grade munitions, commercial explosives or homemade explosives.

The components and device design may vary in sophistication from simple to complex and IEDs can be used by non-state actors. Non-state actors can include (but not be limited to) terrorists, insurgents, drug traffickers, criminals and nuisance pranksters.
