In preparation for the upcoming 2026 general elections, seven groups have submitted applications for registration as political parties to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Uganda. These newly formed parties aim to participate in the democratic process and represent diverse interests within the country.

The seven political parties seeking registration are as follows:

  1. National Foundation Party
  2. National Revival Coalition
  3. National Agrarian Party
  4. People Power Front
  5. Shine Uganda
  6. Uganda Prosperity Party
  7. National Economic and Redemption Party

Before submitting their applications, each party reserved its name, slogan, and symbol. Promoters were then tasked with collecting signatures from citizens across the country. These signatures serve as an essential step in the verification process, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

According to Mr. Julius Mucunguzi, the spokesperson for the IEC, the seven parties received clearance to collect signatures between June 2023 and April 2024. If successfully registered, these new parties will bring the total number of political parties in Uganda to 33.

The 2026 General Elections in Uganda are approaching, and the Electoral Commission has released a roadmap to guide the process. Here are the key dates and activities outlined in the roadmap:

  1. Nomination of Candidates: Presidential candidates, as well as candidates for parliamentary and local government positions, will be nominated between 2nd October and 3rd October 2025.
  2. Demarcation of Electoral Areas: By July 2024, the demarcation of electoral areas will be completed. This process ensures that constituencies and districts are clearly defined for effective representation.
  3. National Voters’ Register Update: The general update of the National Voters’ Register is scheduled for January 2025. This step ensures that the voter database is accurate and up-to-date.
  4. Election Period: The actual elections will take place from January 12 to February 9, 2026. During this period, Ugandans will cast their votes to elect their leaders.

The results of the 2026 Ugandan presidential elections will be closely watched, both within the country and beyond. If current President, HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni wins another term, it will see him lead the country until the 2030s.
