By Frank Kamuntu

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted FUFA approval to host international matches at the renovated Mandela National Stadium (Namboole). In a letter dated May 12, 2024, addressed to FUFA CEO Edgar Watson, CAF confirmed their satisfaction with the stadium’s upgrades.

“Regarding your team’s participation in the FIFA World Cup United 2026 African Qualifiers matchday 3 & 4, following a reinspection of the Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) conducted by CAF inspectors, we acknowledge the improvements made in various facilities in line with previous feedback from CAF,” reads an excerpt from the letter.

“We commend the stadium management and your Association for your collective efforts.”

Uganda is set to host Botswana on June 7th and Algeria on June 10th, 2024, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The last time Uganda Cranes played at Namboole was on November 17, 2019, against Malawi, resulting in a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Emmanuel Okwi and Fahad Bayo.
