The territorial Police in Busoga North have blocked the moblisation tour by National Unity Platform-NUP President, Robert Kyagulanyi in Kamuli municipality, and arrested 10 suspects for inciting violence.
Regional Press and Public Relations Officer in Busoga North, Kasadha Mike says the above are part of the team that had defiantly organized the political activity.
”We had prior credible intelligence that the NUP members had planned a moblisation tour starting 22/05/2024 in Kamuli municipality. As they were waiting for the expected guests, a group of people attempted to carry out illegal demonstrations which prompted us to disperse them and eventually arrested the ten suspects which restored order,” says Kasadha.
Police says last year, the NUP mobilization activities were suspended over non-adherence to set guidelines, that led to public disorder, traffic disruption, loss of business, malicious damage to property, and dangerous driving causing death and injuries, among others.
”As the NUP leadership defiantly went on mobilising and leading processions on the way to Kamuli, their leader,Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi; Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of opposition in parliament Hon. Shamim Malende, Kampala Woman Member of parliament and a rowdy disorderly crowd were intercepted and dispersed proportionately between the border of Kamuli and Jinja district before they turned and went back,” says Kasadha.
He adds that the suspension of mobilisation activities continues until the NUP leadership complies with the police guidelines. ”We commend the members of the public who stood in solidarity for peace and non-violent behaviour associated with some political actors.”
