Pothole Causes Fatal Accident: Four Dead, 11 Injured After Two Taxis Collide

By Frank Kamuntu

At least four lives have been tragically lost, and 11 others have sustained serious injuries following a collision between two taxis along the Mityana-Kampala road in Mityana District. The incident occurred on Friday night and involved two Toyota Hiace vehicles.

According to Ms. Rachel Kawala, the Wamala region police spokesperson, the driver of a speeding taxi from the Kampala side lost control after hitting a pothole near the Kiwawu-Kasiba LC1 area. The taxi veered off its lane and collided with another taxi coming from the Mityana side. Unfortunately, both vehicles lost control, causing motor vehicle UBH 846U to overturn on its right-hand side, resulting in the deaths of four passengers and injuries to 11 others.

The deceased have been identified as Assuman Bossa, a 24-year-old resident of Buwawula in Mityana District, and Tinah Namugenyi, a 26-year-old resident of Kasalaga-Zigoti in Mityana District. Additionally, a young girl and a young boy lost their lives in the collision, although their particulars were not immediately available at the time of reporting.

The bodies of the victims have been taken to Mityana General Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Meanwhile, the wreckage of both taxis has been towed to Mityana police station for inspection. Regrettably, the identities of the two drivers remain unknown, as they are still at large.

Uganda faces significant challenges with its road infrastructure, impacting both safety and economic development. Most roads in Uganda are in a poor state, with inadequate maintenance and frequent potholes.
