At least five people lost their lives, and four others sustained serious injuries in a motor accident along the Rukungiri-Kanungu road in Kanungu district. The incident occurred on Saturday evening around 5:00 PM at Nyakashure in Nyamirama sub-county.
The accident unfolded when a trailer with Rwandan registration number RAD 940J/RL 1455, en route from Rukungiri to Kihihi, veered from the right side of the road instead of staying in the left lane. Tragically, it collided head-on with an Isuzu ELF tipper (registration number UAW 904R) that was correctly traveling from Kihihi to Rukungiri.
Among the victims were four individuals riding in the tipper: Fred Byamukama (the driver), Reagan Akandwanaho, Thereza Kyarisima, and Genario Tumuramye—all residents of Kinanira village in Rukungiri district. Additionally, an unidentified person succumbed to injuries at Kihihi Health Centre IV.
The authorities have registered the case at Kanungu police station under file number TAR: 16/2024.
