2 MPs Released After 48 Hours Of Grilling Over Anti-Govt Protests

By Frank Kamuntu

Two Members of Kenyan Parliament allied to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have been released by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Citizen TV reported that the two lawmakers were released from the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road on Wednesday, July 31, after being questioned over recent anti-government protests.

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya and his Embakasi Central counterpart Mejjadonk Benjamin Gathiru, were picked up on Monday, July 29, evening near a city hotel in Nairobi.

The two lawmakers are suspected to have sponsored chaos, mayhem and anarchy during the Gen Z demonstrations.

Speaking moments after their release, the two MPs disclosed that they were questioned on their sources of wealth.

“Anybody with any evidence, any fact, of whatever misdeed we did, should come very clear and tell us this particular day we financed this or mobilised that…these are the things they should table,” Gakuya said.

Gathiru termed their arrest political, adding that they were asked whether they bought water and T-shirts for protesters.

“We were also asked whether we were buying t-shirts and water, of which I believe that this is just political,” he said.

Gachagua’s close aides had also been interrogated over links to the recent anti-government protests.

On Tuesday, July 30, detectives from the Serious Crimes Units of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) grilled three aides to Gachagua.

The detectives pitched tents at Gachagua’s Karen residence, where they grilled the officials for hours.

Those who were questioned are former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, who now works as a political advisor in the office of the DP, and Munene wa Mumbi, who is the private secretary of the DP.

Former Embakasi West lawmaker Eric Theuri, who now works as the deputy president’s youth advisor, was also questioned.
