By Frank Kamuntu

The First Lady of Uganda, Janet Kataha Museveni, has been honoured by Decent Africa for her significant contributions towards fostering a society marked by grace and compassion.

In a ceremony that coincided with her 76th birthday at the Uweso Masulita Children’s Village, she was celebrated as the Most Decent First Lady in Africa for the year 2024, a recognition that accentuates her profound impact on the continent.

Surrounded by family and dignitaries, including her husband, President Yoweri Museveni, Janet Museveni was applauded for her steadfast commitment to the Ugandan people and her embodiment of decency and integrity.

This recognition marks the second time she has topped this prestigious list in the past decade. Decent Africa, established in 2014 as a subsidiary of HiPipo, champions the advancement of women’s decency, empowerment, and financial inclusion. As a strategic entity, it supports women from grassroots levels to influential roles across the continent.

“Your Excellency, your leadership has inspired many, and your actions have woven a lasting narrative of hope across Uganda,” she commended during the award presentation.

The award criteria included various factors, such as Integrity and Authenticity, cultural representation, and Public Engagement, assessed through a stringent evaluation process to ensure fairness and transparency.

Furthermore, Minister Ssebugwawo invited the First Lady to the upcoming Decent Africa Summit in December 2024, where other top First Ladies will be recognised.

Innocent Kawooya, the lead at Decent Africa, also commented on the critical role of digital representation for First Ladies in enhancing public interaction, noting a gap in this area, with only about 30% maintaining a strong social media presence.

He emphasised the importance of establishing robust online platforms to better connect with the public, especially the youth.

This accolade reaffirms Janet Museveni’s exceptional contributions and her ongoing dedication to promoting the values of decency across Africa.
