By Frank Kamuntu

On July 12, 2024, the Kajansi Territorial Police, in collaboration with the Directorate of Crime Intelligence, rescued 1.5-year-old Sserwada Lucas who was kidnapped by his family’s maid, Nakija Prossy, 20, on July 10, 2024.

Upon being reported missing, the police immediately launched an investigation that led them to Nakija’s boyfriend, Kayanga Allan, 20, in Luzira. Further investigation traced Nakija and the child to Mayuge landing site, where Nakija was apprehended as she attempted to cross over.

The child was found alive and unharmed. The motive for the kidnapping is still under investigation. The suspects are currently detained at Kajansi Police Station as the investigation continues.

Child kidnapping is a serious and growing concern in Uganda, posing significant threats to the safety and well-being of children. It involves the unlawful abduction or detention of minors, often for purposes such as ransom, forced labor, sexual exploitation, and ritual sacrifices. This issue has garnered attention due to its severe impact on families and communities, as well as its implications for law enforcement and child protection policies.

Kidnapped children often suffer severe psychological trauma, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The experience can have long-lasting effects on their mental health and development.
