HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni yesterday condemned a group of Buganda chiefs who last week travelled to Namibia to see the king, without getting clearance from Buganda Kingdom or the Royal Family.
The clan chiefs were on Tuesday arrested by Namibian Police while travelling to Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre in Namibia’s northwestern region of Kunene, where the king is receiving treatment.
These were reportedly detained at Outjo Police for over 3 hours, before being released.
Commenting about the incident on Friday, President Museveni described the actions of the chiefs as “indiscipline.”
“I request all the Ugandans to stop embarrassing Uganda by opportunistically trying to show how much they are for the Kabaka,” Museveni remarked in a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen Jeje Odongo.

”PREVENTIVE ARREST OF BUGANDA CLAN HEADS (ABATAKA) IN NAMIBIA.
I have seen a letter to the Permanent Secretary, Foreign Affairs from the High Commissioner of Uganda to South Africa and Namibia, informing me of the indiscipline of some Ugandans vis a vis the Kabaka’s presence in Namibia for medical treatment which the Ugandans did not know about until the Bataka told me on the 8th of June, 2024, when they came with Hon. Sebugwawo. I told them that we are not aware and nor are we involved in the issue of the HH Kabaka’s presence in Namibia.
Therefore, by the copies of this letter, I request all the Ugandans to stop embarrassing Uganda by opportunistically trying to show how much they are for the Kabaka. Apart from the Kabaka himself, the next level of authorization to visit him could be his family or whoever else he has authorized.
These dramas are happening away from our jurisdiction. Otherwise, we would have taken action.”
Recently, clan leaders who insisted on flying to Namibia to check on Kabaka, against Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga’s counsel not to do so, were stranded there after the king’s medical specialists apparently denied them access to their high-value patient.
Mayiga had repeatedly counseled certain groups of Baganda, who have forcefully been clamoring to go to Namibia and check on the Kabaka, to leave the king alone so that he can recuperate from his ill health.
Despite the pressure to let them go to Namibia and meet the Kabaka, Mayiga repeatedly advising these groups that the Kabaka’s health issues are private and should be handled by his medical specialists.
The King traveled to Namibia in April 2024 and has since then been undergoing treatment for his ailments at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre.
Located in a 5000 hectare area, Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre uses the Okonguarri method of treatment that has particularly successful in treating depressive disorders, anxiety-related disorders, personality dysfunctions (psychosis), post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), stress management, somatoform disorders, substance-related disorders, and childhood-related disorders.
The facility provides a range of therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Behavioral Emotive Therapy (REBT) and Psychotherapy.
