Peru – Grief has engulfed the southern part of Peru after 26 people were confirmed dead in a horrible accident.
CNN reported that the Tuesday, July 16 accident occurred after a bus belonging to local company Turismo Molina Union SAC plummeted into a ravine.
According to highway safety officials, the bus skidded off a highway in Peru’s Andean Ayacucho region at dawn, overturning and plummeting down a slope of about 200 meters (656 feet) high.
The bus with more than 40 occupants was headed from Lima to the Andean region of Ayacucho when it veered off a cliff.
Officials said 14 people were injured, including the two co-drivers of the bus, were taken to hospitals.
Rescue teams camped in the area to recover bodies from the wreckage in a hard-to-reach area.
Videos shared on social media show the vehicle completely destroyed and bodies scattered around, along with luggage.
Relatives of those injured rushed to the Mariscal Hospital in Ayacucho, where some of the injured were taken, hoping to find their relatives alive.
“We don’t know if my brother is in the hospital or dead. All the roads are full of holes, the government does not do any maintenance,” one of the relatives said.
