Land grabbing in Uganda is a significant and ongoing issue, characterized by a range of problems involving large-scale acquisitions of land, often to the detriment of local communities. Key aspects of the issue include:

  1. Expropriation of Land: There have been numerous instances where land is forcibly acquired from local communities for commercial purposes, such as agriculture, mining, and real estate development. This often happens without fair compensation or adequate consultation with the affected communities.
  2. Legal and Regulatory Challenges: The legal framework governing land in Uganda can be complex and is often criticized for being weak or poorly enforced. Issues include unclear land tenure systems, disputes over land ownership, and inadequate protection for customary land rights, which are often not officially recognized.
  3. Corruption and Abuse of Power: Corruption within local and national governments can exacerbate land-grabbing issues. Cases have emerged where officials and powerful individuals exploit their positions to illegally acquire land or facilitate its acquisition by others.
