By Frank Kamuntu

Yesterday the Indian community in Uganda celebrated the 77th independence anniversary at the event held by India’s Indian High Commission on Kyadondo Road, Nakasero, Kampala.

The event, featuring vibrant cultural displays and a strong sense of unity, was attended by the Indian High Commissioner, Indian business tycoons and great friends of the Indian community.

It is estimated that about a 40,000-strong Indian community, which has greatly contributed to the Ugandan culture and economy, lives in the country today. The Indian community in Uganda has been instrumental in developing Uganda’s trade and commerce sector, with many owning businesses in the service and tourism industry, textiles, clothing, and other retail industries.

Among the Ugandan-Indian community is tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia, who runs the Ruparelia Group, a conglomerate interested in banking, insurance, education, real estate, and hospitality.

With an estimated net worth of over $1.2 billion, Sudhir is one of the wealthiest individuals in Uganda and is among the top taxpayers in Uganda. He employs over 10,000 people directly and over 12500 indirectly thereby changing the lives of thousands of Ugandans.

He has built his business empire through strategic investments and partnerships and has received numerous awards for his contributions to Uganda’s economic growth.

On October 9, 2013, Sudhir was awarded a Golden Jubilee Presidential Medal by President Museveni in recognition of his contribution to the growth of business and industry in Uganda as an industrialist.
