Revival Of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Market Boosts Kasese’s Economy & Community

By Brian Keitira

The reopening of the Mpondwe-Lhubiriha fish market has brought new life to Kasese, particularly in the Bweera area, with business booming once again. After five years of inactivity, the market was relocated from the Congo side to the Ugandan side by Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, Commander of the UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit under the guidance of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, a move that has significantly impacted the local economy.

The market’s reopening has revived trade in fish, a vital economic activity for many local families, allowing fishermen to sell their catch directly to consumers and intermediaries, ensuring fair prices. This has generated jobs for various stakeholders, including fishermen, vendors, transporters, and local service providers, contributing to the local economy. Local businesses, such as restaurants and grocery stores, are likely to see increased patronage, leading to additional employment opportunities. The government has seen a remarkable increase in earnings, from an average of UGX 500 million (approximately USD 137,000) per month to UGX 1.2 billion (approximately USD 330,000) per month, a 140% increase.

The accessibility of fresh fish has enhanced food security in the area, addressing nutritional needs. The market serves as a social hub, fostering interactions among community members, enhancing relationships, and building a sense of unity. Women make up 60% of vendors and traders, with their earnings increasing by 50%, averaging UGX 500,000 (approximately USD 137) per month, enabling them to support their families and invest in their businesses. According to Mr Hamza Kibaba a resident of Mpondwe -Lhubiriha Town council and a trader says that their life was miserable during the times when the market was on the congo side. Most people had lost their jobs like loaders, off loaders, market vendors because majority of them could not afford the cost of doing business on the congo border. He thanks FPU commander Lt Col Mercy for having fought tooth and nail to revive the lost glory of the common people who had been left with no hopes of survival.

The reopening of the market has also led to an influx of people from neighboring districts and countries, spurring economic development in the area. New businesses have sprung up to cater to the increased demand for goods and services, with the population of Bweera and Mpondwe growing by 20% since the reopening. The fishing industry in Bweera employs over 5,000 people, with many more benefiting indirectly.

The reopening of the Mpondwe-Lhubiriha fish market presents substantial opportunities for economic growth, social benefits, and increased government revenue in Kasese District. By successfully leveraging the economic and social benefits derived from this market, the NRM can potentially revitalize its popularity and influence in the region, further securing electoral support. The successful implementation of projects like the fish market can enhance grassroots support and translate into higher voter turnout for the NRM in upcoming elections.
