Gov’t Confirms Detection Of 5 Suspected Mpox Cases, One Patient Is Under Isolation

By Our Reporter

The Kenyan Ministry of Health has announced five suspected Mpox cases in the country, with one patient currently in isolation.

In a statement seen by Swift News, the ministry affirmed that there are currently no active cases of the viral disease in the country.

However, the country has recorded five new suspected cases, bringing the total number of suspected cases to 29.

“Of these, twenty-three (23) have tested negative for Mpox, while six (6) cases are pending confirmation from the reference laboratory,” the statement read in part.

The ministry reported that a recent case was identified in Kiambu county at Vineyard Hospital, where the patient is now in isolation and receiving treatment.

The Health Ministry further reported that 21,350 travellers were screened, bringing the total screenings to 302,436 since the surveillance began.

The public has been warned against sharing suspected Mpox cases online to prevent the spread of misinformation and to protect the privacy of those affected.

Kiambu Health CEC Dr. Elias Maina said that the county government is aware of the reports circulating online about Mpox in the county.

“We wish to confirm that there is indeed a suspected case, which is currently under thorough laboratory investigation. We are awaiting the official lab results and will provide a comprehensive update as soon as they are available,” he said.

He urged county residents to remain calm, assuring them there is no cause for alarm.

Maina affirmed that the county government, through the health department, has activated all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.

The Ministry of Health had initially detailed the symptoms of the disease, noting that an infected individual may exhibit signs such as a skin rash or mucosal lesions, fever, headache, generalized aches, and swollen lymph nodes.

However, individuals can protect themselves from contracting the disease by avoiding close contact with those showing Mpox symptoms or confirmed cases.

One can also ensure their safety by washing their hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitiser.

Lastly, seeking medical attention immediately if any symptoms occur and isolating yourself to prevent the virus from spreading is crucial.
