By Frank Kamuntu

A team of 10 KIU Guild Union representatives, led by Guild Presidents Yvonne Keinembambazi (Main Campus, Kampala) and Prudence Mahirwe (Western Campus, Uganda), visited the Kiteezi Landfill tragedy site on August 27th, 2024, to donate essential relief items to affected families. The donation was received by Red Cross Communications Officer, John Cliff Wamala, at the relief camp.

The Kiteezi Landfill tragedy, which occurred on August 10th, 2024, claimed numerous lives and left many more injured. According to official reports, the affected persons are estimated to be over 1,000 from all three affected villages. The number of displaced persons registered at the temporary shelter by the Office of the Prime Minister and Uganda Red Cross Society stands at 56 households so far.

President Yoweri Museveni has expressed concern over the tragedy and has called for urgent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Lukia Isanga Nakadama, third Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda and Minister Without Portfolio, commended the KIU Guild Union for their kindness. “I am deeply impressed by the compassion and initiative shown by KIU’s Guild Union. Their actions demonstrate the true spirit of community and social responsibility.”

Guild President Yvonne Keinembambazi stated, “We couldn’t stand by and do nothing. We had to act, and I’m proud of our students for coming together to make a difference.”

Guild President Prudence Mahirwe added, “Our hearts go out to the affected families. We thank our students for their generosity and commitment to helping those in need.”

The KIU Guild Union’s donation includes food, clothing, medical supplies, and shelter materials, aimed at alleviating the suffering of the victims. The team’s efforts have set an example for others to follow, inspiring a wider response to support the victims. As the affected families begin the long journey of recovery, they can take solace in knowing that they are not alone.
