Chief Inspector David Maina of the Rapid Deployment Unit, the police officer who lost both hands during protests against the now-withdrawn Finance Bill 2024 protests, has shared his experience of the incident.
Determined to manage the relentless protests, Maina wanted to release a stun grenade at the Nairobi demonstrators when it exploded on him, chopping off his both hands.
According to the officer, the explosion was an unfortunate accident, admitting he could not fully explain how it happened.
He explained that while attempting to remove a pin, an unexpected explosion occurred, leaving him in excruciating pain.
“Initially, there was a problem removing the pin. When it finally got off, I just saw darkness. I do not know what happened because this is something I have used since training. I refer to it as just an accident,” he said in an interview with TV47.
Maina emphasised that he never intended to harm innocent Kenyans, explaining that the goal was simply to create a loud noise to disperse the protesters.
Maina noted that his family and friends were equally shocked by what they witnessed. He has since undergone counselling and is in the process of healing.
Although he remains dependent in some areas, he holds onto hope for a full recovery.
“I bled so much. Were it not for doctors who acted promptly, things would have been different. The wounds are healing and I am in the process of recovery. Now I am somehow dependent but I know, given time, things will get on well,” the officer added.
He mentioned that doctors will provide him with devices to assist him in returning to his duties.
Following the incident, CS Alfred Mutua pledged KSh 1 million to support the officer’s treatment, though this promise has not yet been fulfilled.
Maina remains hopeful that the politician will honour his commitment, noting that they have been in contact.
He also expressed gratitude to his superiors for their support and to all the well-wishers who have helped him, including facilitating the transfer of his children to top schools.
