The Victoria Sharks, the rugby team from Victoria University, have unveiled their new kits ahead of the upcoming rugby season, signaling a fresh chapter in the club’s rapid rise to prominence in Ugandan rugby.
In just two years since their formation, the Sharks have achieved a remarkable feat by securing a coveted place in Uganda’s Rugby Premier League, the highest level of competitive rugby in the country. Their meteoric rise reflects not just skill but also a deep commitment to the sport, marking them as one of the most exciting new teams on the scene.
Rugby in Uganda has traditionally been dominated by a few established clubs such as Kobs RFC, Black Pirates, and Heathens RFC, with these teams having dominated the domestic rugby scene for years. However, the Sharks’ entry into the Premier League signals a shift in the competitive landscape, bringing new energy and talent into the top tier of the sport.
The Sharks’ rise has been nothing short of impressive. Their journey began with stellar performances in the Varsity Sevens, where they quickly gained recognition for their speed, tactical play, and team cohesion. They then transitioned into the Central Regional League and Championship, where they continued to exceed expectations with dominant performances, ultimately securing their place in the Premier League.
Isaac Lutwama Nsubuga, the CEO of the Uganda Rugby Union, commended the Sharks for their incredible journey. “In just two years, the Sharks have shown remarkable growth and dedication to the sport. Their progression from the Varsity Sevens to the Premier League is a strong indicator of the talent and determination within the team. We are eager to see how they perform at the highest level of Ugandan rugby,” Nsubuga said.
The Rugby Premier League in Uganda is known for its high-intensity matches, attracting top players from across the country and showcasing some of the best rugby talent in East Africa. Teams like the Kobs and Black Pirates have historically dominated, but with new teams like the Victoria Sharks entering the mix, the competition is becoming more unpredictable and exciting for fans. The league’s popularity continues to grow, with a steadily increasing number of young players vying for spots in top-tier teams.
Dr. Lawrence Muganga, the Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, expressed his pride in the Sharks’ achievements, especially their undefeated run in the University Sevens. “The success of the Sharks has been a testament to the university’s commitment to both academic and athletic excellence. This team’s rise has truly embodied the high standards we aim for, and we are incredibly proud of their journey.”
The Sharks’ story began when Sebuliba Patrick, the team’s chairman, identified a group of promising students who had the talent but lacked financial support to pursue rugby professionally. Recognizing their potential, Victoria University stepped in to offer rugby scholarships to 13 students, giving them the opportunity to hone their skills and pursue their passion for the sport. This initiative laid the groundwork for the team’s subsequent success, creating a solid foundation for their rise in Uganda’s competitive rugby landscape.
The Sharks are now poised to make their mark on the Premier League, with high expectations not just from their university but also from rugby fans across Uganda. With a strong blend of youthful energy and experienced guidance, they are expected to bring new dynamism to the league.
As they prepare for their Premier League debut, the Victoria Sharks are setting their sights on more than just participation – they aim to challenge the dominance of the established clubs and make their mark as one of the top teams in Uganda’s rugby history. With a team full of talented players, strong leadership, and a commitment to excellence, the Sharks’ future looks bright as they look to inspire the next generation of rugby players in Uganda.
