Smuggling Ring Busted At Kisementi, Pioneer Mall & Lugogo; UGX 443M In Taxes Recovered

By Kato Jamil

In a recent operation, the URA Customs Enforcement Team One successfully busted a smuggling ring specializing in premium tech gadgets. The three-day operation led to the recovery of un customed goods worth UGX 443,362,476 in taxes.

The smuggler’s tactic was to import goods into DR Congo and then smuggle them into Uganda through the porous border. However, an intricate intel by the URA Customs team in collaboration with the Uganda Police, put an end to the smuggler’s activities.

The operation resulted in the recovery of a plethora of tech gadgets, including smartphones, mac computers, tablets, power banks and Bluetooth speakers. The smuggled goods were found in three renowned tech shops located in Kisementi, Pioneer Mall and Lugogo.

The smuggler will now face significant penalties, with the total amount payable exceeding UGX 443M. This serves as a reminder that tax evasion is not worth the risk, as the consequences can be severe. In fact, Customs has emphasized that it is less costly for businesses to comply with taxes than to evade them.

This operation is not an isolated incident. Just a few days ago, the Customs team at Entebbe Airport recovered phones worth UGX 200M in taxes. Customs remains committed to leveraging technology, intelligence gathering, and partnerships with law enforcement.
