The Uganda Traffic Police have intensified efforts to ensure compliance with road safety standards, issuing a strict directive for all bus drivers to obtain driver’s badges as mandated by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
This initiative aims to enforce provisions under the Traffic and Road Safety Act and enhance accountability in the public transport sector.
According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, bus drivers must secure their badges by December 4, 2024. Failure to comply will result in legal action, including potential prosecution and penalties that may extend to seven years imprisonment under Section 42 of the Act.
“Drivers found without valid badges will not only face prosecution but will also be prohibited from operating passenger vehicles,” Kananura emphasized, highlighting the stringent measures in place to deter violations.
The Ministry of Works and Transport is providing the badges free of charge to simplify compliance. Traffic authorities urged bus operators to take advantage of this initiative promptly to avoid disruptions to their services and the legal consequences of non-compliance.
“This requirement is straightforward and cost-free. We strongly encourage all bus drivers to adhere to the deadline,” the Directorate noted in a public statement.
From December 4, Traffic Police will roll out nationwide checkpoints, verifying that all bus drivers possess the required badges. Non-compliant operators will be stopped from carrying passengers and referred to legal authorities for prosecution.
This move is part of a broader strategy to enforce road safety laws, ensuring that only certified and accountable drivers are entrusted with public transport responsibilities. Authorities believe that stricter regulation will help mitigate road accidents and uphold passenger safety standards.
