Relief As Security Recovers Three ‘Loaded’ Guns In Kotido

By Kato Jamil

In a successful operation in Kotido District, joint security forces have retrieved three firearms following a voluntary handover facilitated through persuasive measures. The firearms, along with accompanying ammunition, were surrendered by three individuals under the government’s Amnesty Window initiative, which encourages the voluntary relinquishment of illegal firearms.

The individuals involved in the handovers include:

  • Lokomol Daudi from Naryamatolim Cell, Lokitaleabu Town Council, who surrendered an SMG (No. 79551) with five live rounds of ammunition.
  • Lokutu Lochubae from Kadokin Cell, South Division, who turned over an SMG (No. 10427) with two live rounds.
  • Lochu Loose Peter from Napong Cell, Lokitaleabu Central Ward, Lokitaleabu Town Council, who handed in an SMG (No. 1977244449) with one live round.

As per the established security protocols, all three individuals were granted release under the Amnesty Window programme, which offers participants registration, disarmament cards, and opportunities for community reintegration. This initiative is designed to empower reformed individuals by improving their living conditions and encouraging them to become advocates for peace within their communities.

The success of this handover aligns with President Yoweri Museveni’s visit to the Karamoja sub-region, where he is assessing the impact of the Parish Development Model (PDM), a government initiative aimed at increasing household incomes and driving socio-economic development.

Security officials continue to encourage armed groups in the region to take advantage of the Amnesty Window and voluntarily surrender their weapons.
