Bukedea District was abuzz with excitement and gratitude as the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, launched a groundbreaking health camp offering free medical services to the community. The camp, the first of its kind in the district, brought together diligent medical staff from major referral hospitals across the country, including Mulago, Soroti, Kurudu, the Uganda Cancer Institute, and Korea-Uganda Hospital, among others.
“This is my commitment to the people of Bukedea and the Teso region at large to ensure that we bring services closer to the people,” the Speaker said as residents expressed their appreciation. She assured the community that all the services provided at the camp were free and part of her contribution as their Woman MP for Bukedea District and the speaker of parliament.
Advocating for Better Healthcare
Rt. Hon. Anita Among emphasized the need for the government to prioritize healthcare, promising to advocate for an enhanced budget allocation for health facilities in the upcoming financial year. She also urged the people of Bukedea to continue supporting her leadership as they head towards the 2026 elections.
Her commitment to improving healthcare in the region is not new. Recently, she commissioned a comprehensive medical hospital learning school, urging parents to encourage their children to pursue science courses and careers in medicine.
Dr. Ben Watmon, the chairperson of the health camp organizing committee and director of Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, lauded the Speaker’s efforts in bringing healthcare services closer to the people. “Health workers wait for patients in health facilities, and in many cases, the patients can’t reach them. But you [Speaker] have brought the services closer, and this bridges the gap,” Dr. Watmon said.
The health camp catered to hundreds of residents, providing medical checkups, consultations, and treatment for various conditions. One of the beneficiaries, Okiror Masiribu, an elderly man battling arthritis, expressed his gratitude. “I am so glad I have had the opportunity to meet the best doctors from Mulago Hospital. They have checked me and proposed better treatment for this arthritis that has been troubling me. Thanks to Hon. Anita for thinking about us and to President Museveni for supporting such initiatives.”
A Testament to Leadership and Service
The success of the health camp is evidence to the Speaker’s steadfast commitment to improving the lives of her people. As Bukedea residents rejoiced, it became clear that Rt. Hon. Anita Among’s efforts to bring essential services closer to the community are making a lasting impact.
This initiative not only addressed the pressing healthcare needs of the district but also set a standard for leadership dedicated to uplifting and empowering the community.
