“Run For Your Lives Or We Crush You”-Hundreds Of Desperate UN Staff Flee To Uganda As M23 Flushes Them Out Of Congo

By Frank Kamuntu

The sudden takeover of Goma by the M23 rebel group and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has sent shockwaves across the region, forcing over 1,000 people—including United Nations personnel, peacekeepers, and Congolese civilians—to seek refuge in Uganda. The crisis underscores the escalating instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its broader geopolitical implications.

A Desperate Exodus Amidst Rising Tensions

The evacuees crossed into Uganda at the Katuna and Kyanika border points, moving in a heavily guarded convoy that stretched for kilometers. Among them were humanitarian workers, Congolese government officials, and their families, all fleeing an increasingly volatile situation in Goma. Their final destination is Entebbe International Airport, where they are expected to be transported to Kinshasa and other safe zones.

“The scale of this evacuation is unprecedented,” remarked a Ugandan border official. “We’ve never seen such a mass movement of UN staff, aid workers, and officials under these circumstances.”

A Bold Power Play by M23

The takeover of Goma marks a significant turning point in the ongoing conflict in the DRC. By seizing control of the largest city in eastern Congo and expelling international personnel, M23 and its alleged backers in Rwanda have demonstrated their growing military confidence. This move challenges both the Congolese government and international organizations operating in the region.

For MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC, the forced departure of its staff raises serious concerns about its ability to continue operations effectively. With over 800,000 people in North and South Kivu already reliant on humanitarian aid, the evacuation of key personnel is expected to exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Vivian van de Perre, Deputy Head of MONUSCO, issued an urgent call for international intervention, emphasizing the need for immediate humanitarian access to affected areas.

International Repercussions and Diplomatic Pressure

The rapid deterioration of security in Goma has drawn strong reactions from the global community. The United Kingdom has openly condemned Rwanda’s involvement in the conflict, demanding the immediate withdrawal of RDF forces from Congolese territory.

“The occupation of Goma and the expulsion of UN personnel constitute a flagrant violation of the DRC’s sovereignty,” the UK Foreign Office declared. “We are reviewing our diplomatic and financial support to Rwanda in light of these developments.”

As tensions mount, fears grow that the conflict could spill over into neighboring countries, further destabilizing the Great Lakes region. Uganda’s decision to facilitate the evacuation underscores the delicate balancing act regional governments must maintain as they navigate this unfolding crisis.

With the M23’s grip on Goma tightening and diplomatic efforts scrambling to contain the situation, the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether this conflict escalates further or if international pressure can force a de-escalation.
