Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has moved swiftly to clarify recent reports about high-profile judicial appointments in Uganda, including that of Deputy Chief Justice and several other key judicial positions. In a statement released on Friday, February 7, the JSC refuted claims circulating in the media, distancing itself from the unverified information.
The Commission emphasized that it had not issued any official communication regarding the appointments of the Deputy Chief Justice, Justices of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, or High Court Judges. The JSC urged the public to disregard the reports, which it said were based on unauthorized publications.
The statement, delivered by Ms. Maria Theresa Nabulya, the acting senior communications officer, further stressed the importance of relying on established, official channels for accurate information.
The clarification follows widespread media reports suggesting that President Museveni had appointed Justice Flavian Zeija as the new Deputy Chief Justice, replacing Justice Richard Buteera, who is preparing for retirement in May. Justice Zeija, who has served as the Principal Judge of the High Court, was purportedly set to assume the new role as part of efforts to bolster the Judiciary’s capacity.
Additionally, the reports speculated that Justice Muzamil Mutangula Kibeedi would take over from Justice Esther Kisaakye in the Supreme Court. These and other purported judicial appointments, including those to the Court of Appeal and High Court, had sparked significant public attention.
In its statement, the JSC clarified that only official communications through channels such as their verified X account (@JSCUganda), official website (www.jsc.go.ug), and formal letters issued on official letterhead are credible sources of information.
Ms. Nabulya further assured the public that the JSC would continue to issue official announcements exclusively through its designated platforms, reiterating that unauthorized publications should be disregarded.
