Traffic Alert: Fuel Tanker Explosion Rocks Mityana-Kampala Road

By Frank Kamuntu

An urgent traffic update has been issued this morning, February 8, 2025, following a fuel tanker fire on the Mityana-Kampala road in Mityana District, near Kiwawu Tea Estate. The fire has caused significant disruption, blocking half of the road and rendering it impassable for vehicles.

Michael Kananura, the Traffic Spokesperson for the Uganda Police Force, confirmed the incident and provided an update on the ongoing situation. “Our team is on the scene, securing the area and directing traffic while the fire brigade works to extinguish the fire. The road remains blocked, and we urge all travelers to avoid the area for their safety,” Kananura stated.

Authorities are working diligently to manage the scene. The Uganda Police have secured the area, and the fire brigade is responding promptly to ensure the fire is contained. However, travelers have been advised to exercise caution and follow the instructions of traffic officers.

“We ask for patience from those traveling along this route. Please cooperate with traffic officers on-site, as they are doing everything they can to ensure the situation is handled safely and efficiently,” Kananura added.

In 2020, a fuel tanker accident on the Kampala-Mbarara road resulted in a significant fire and long delays. These incidents highlight the need for strong emergency response measures and public awareness of the risks on the road.

As the situation develops, authorities will continue to provide updates. Travellers are urged to consider alternative routes if possible and avoid the area until it is cleared.

“The safety of the public is our priority. Please refrain from traveling through the affected area until the fire is extinguished and the road is safe to use again,” Kananura emphasized.
