Uganda’s tourism industry has received a significant boost with the appointment of Dr. Musinguzi James as the new Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This appointment has been met with widespread approval from Ugandans, particularly those in the tourism sector, who see Dr. Musinguzi as a visionary leader capable of steering the industry to greater heights.

A concerned Ugandan with a deep interest in the tourism industry recently shared a heartfelt message via social media congratulating Dr. Musinguzi on his new role. The message highlighted Dr. Musinguzi’s exceptional track record and his transformative impact on Uganda’s tourism sector, particularly during the challenging post-COVID-19 period.

“Folks, kindly join me to congratulate Dr. Musinguzi James upon his appointment as the Executive Director of UWA. Even if this job was advertised globally, Dr. Musinguzi would still have taken it,” the message began.

The writer went on to outline Dr. Musinguzi’s remarkable achievements, particularly his role in reviving visitor numbers to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) after the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, UWEC recorded 383,398 visitor entries. However, due to the pandemic, this number plummeted to 67,789 in 2020.

Dr. Musinguzi’s leadership saw a dramatic turnaround, with visitor entries increasing to 131,117 in 2021 and an impressive 486,464 in 2022. By 2023, the number had surged to 619,164, with 99% of these visitors being domestic tourists. This achievement is particularly significant as it debunks the myth that domestic tourism is not viable in Uganda.

“Dr. Musinguzi has proved beyond any reasonable doubt that domestic tourism in Uganda is a reality,” the message stated.

The writer attributed Dr. Musinguzi’s success to his strong academic background and expertise in corporate governance. His PhD dissertation, titled *The Efficacy of Institutional Systems in Managing Wildlife Trade in Uganda*, is described as a masterpiece that underscores the importance of corporate governance in institutional success.

“Dr. Musinguzi’s colourful career has taught us that the starting point for any successful institution is CORPORATE GOVERNANCE. In addition, he has taught us that the effect of CORPORATE GOVERNANCE on performance equally applies to the Private Sector, the Civil Society, and Government,” the message continued.

Dr. Musinguzi’s academic credentials further highlight his unique blend of expertise in biodiversity conservation and business management. He holds a Bachelor of Science with Education (Biology), a Post-Graduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management, a Master of Science in Biology, and a Master in Business Administration.

The writer concluded by urging all stakeholders—private sector, civil society, and government—to rally behind Dr. Musinguzi to ensure UWA becomes an institution that works for everyone.

“I humbly request that all of us (The Private Sector, The Civil Society, and the Government) rally behind Dr. Musinguzi James, to make UWA an institution which will work for all the stakeholders. For God and My Country.”

Many Ugandans have expressed their joy and optimism following Dr. Musinguzi’s appointment. His proven track record, combined with his deep understanding of corporate governance and biodiversity conservation, has instilled confidence in his ability to lead UWA effectively. As Uganda’s tourism industry continues to recover and grow, Dr. Musinguzi’s leadership is seen as a beacon of hope for a brighter future.
