Ugandans are mourning the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Okoth Ogola, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. Ogola, who served as IGP from 1981 to 1985, leaves behind a significant legacy of leadership, dedication, and transformation within the force.
Current IGP, Abas Byakagaba, expressed his condolences and underscored the importance of Ogola’s contributions to the Uganda Police Force. Byakagaba stated, “The Uganda Police Force deeply mourns the loss of former IGP Okoth Ogola. His leadership and contributions to the force remain invaluable, and we are committed to ensuring he is remembered with the dignity he deserves.”
Ogola’s tenure as IGP is marked by substantial reforms that played a key role in shaping the modern police force in Uganda. He was instrumental in strengthening law enforcement, enhancing police professionalism, and improving relations between the police and the community. These changes had a lasting impact on Uganda’s security framework, setting the foundation for the police force’s development in the years that followed.
During his time in leadership, Ogola worked tirelessly to elevate the standards of the police force, focusing on accountability, discipline, and fostering a culture of service within the force. His visionary leadership not only reshaped the police force’s internal structure but also solidified its role in ensuring peace and security across the country.
As the Uganda Police Force mourns his loss, plans are already underway to honor Ogola’s memory. A public vigil is expected to be held, giving colleagues, friends, and well-wishers the opportunity to pay their respects and celebrate his life and service. Additional funeral arrangements will be shared in due course, ensuring that the late IGP receives the proper recognition he so deserves.
Ogola’s passing leaves a void within the Uganda Police Force, but his legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to the nation’s security will continue to inspire future generations. His contributions to Uganda’s law enforcement will not be forgotten, as the force strives to build on the foundation he helped establish.
