Nyanzi Fred Ssentamu, the Head of Mobilization for the National Unity Platform (NUP), has this evening been forcibly abducted by armed men at gunpoint from Kubbiri Roundabout, says party President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu adding that he has been taken to unknown location.
These come shortly after Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) issued a stern warning to the NUP regarding its supporters, referred to as “foot soldiers.”
The army stated that these individuals could face trial in a court martial if they continue to exhibit behavior resembling that of military officers. This was after videos and photos circulated on social media last week showing Kyagulanyi inspecting a parade of men dressed in red attire, who saluted him as he moved through their ranks. These foot soldiers were being led by Nyanzi in singing the revolutionary songs.
This display caught the attention of the UPDF, which expressed concern over what it views as an imitation of military conduct.
UPDF spokesperson Brigadier General Felix Kulaigye commented, “If a duck begins to fly like a bird, what is that called?”
He further warned that individuals engaging in such behavior could face arrest and be brought before a disciplinary committee for violating military protocols.
“If these individuals continue to mimic the army, they might find themselves facing legal consequences,” Kulaigye added.
Meanwhile, all these comes shortly after a January 31st ruling by the Supreme Court, which blocked the military from trying civilians in a court martial.
The ruling was expected to affect cases such as that of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, who remains in prison despite the court’s decision.
