Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko Appointed As 7th Bishop Of West Buganda Diocese, Here’s Is His Profile!

By Frank Kamuntu

The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has officially elected Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko as the 7th Bishop of West Buganda Diocese, marking a significant moment in the leadership of the diocese.

His appointment was announced following a sitting at Acaka Hotel in Kitgum, held immediately after the 48th commemoration of Janani Luwum Day—a fitting backdrop to a leadership transition that underscores faith, sacrifice, and service.

Rev. Canon Nsereko is set to be consecrated and enthroned on March 30, 2025, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, Masaka, where he will assume full spiritual and administrative leadership of the diocese. His appointment has been met with enthusiasm and anticipation from the clergy, laity, and wider Christian community, as he steps into a role that carries both great responsibility and immense opportunity for transformation.

Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko’s appointment is a testament to his dedication, experience, and unwavering faith. Born on July 5, 1965, in Wakiso District, he has devoted his life to the ministry of the Church of Uganda, having served in various capacities for over three decades.

His journey in church leadership began with his ordination as a deacon on December 9, 1989, at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Namukozi, Mityana District. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, eventually being made a Canon on January 17, 2010, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, the very place where he will soon be enthroned as bishop.

He has served as Provost of St. Paul’s Cathedral Kako, Vicar of Kakoma Church of Uganda, and most recently, Archdeacon of Kakoma Archdeaconry. His leadership in these roles has demonstrated a strong commitment to faith, community service, and church growth.

Beyond the church, Rev. Canon Nsereko is known for his advocacy for education and socio-economic empowerment. He holds a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University and a Diploma in Primary Education from the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo, which have equipped him with the theological depth and educational expertise needed to guide the diocese effectively.

Rev. Nsereko’s appointment comes at a time when the West Buganda Diocese is looking toward the future with renewed hope and expectation. His pastoral experience, administrative capabilities, and deep-rooted connection to the diocese make him a fitting choice for this position.

His leadership is expected to bring stability, inspire spiritual revival, and enhance community engagement, particularly in addressing the evolving challenges facing the Church. With the youth increasingly disengaged from traditional religious structures and socio-economic struggles affecting many congregants, his appointment is seen as an opportunity to bridge generational gaps and foster renewed faith-based development.

His focus on discipleship, unity, and socio-economic development, as expressed in his first remarks after his election, aligns with the broader mission of the Church of Uganda.

“I am humbled by this calling to serve as Bishop. With God’s guidance, I pledge to continue fostering faith, love, and development for the glory of God and the betterment of our people,” he stated.

As Rev. Canon Nsereko prepares to take up his new role, the Christian community of West Buganda Diocese eagerly awaits his leadership. His extensive experience, coupled with his compassionate and transformative approach to ministry, positions him as a leader who can steer the diocese toward a future of faith-driven progress.

His enthronement on March 30, 2025, will mark the beginning of a new chapter—one that holds the promise of stronger discipleship, renewed commitment to service, and deeper engagement with both the church and society.
