National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, has called on Ugandans to unite and take action in light of the deteriorating health of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is currently being detained at Luzira Upper Prison.
Kyagulanyi, in a statement released ahead of a major event tomorrow, expressed deep concern for Besigye’s condition and urged citizens to come together for prayer, mobilization, and the fight for justice.
“Tomorrow, we come together at 10:00 am—leaders, comrades, and patriots from various walks of life. We will join in prayer, mobilization, and action to address the nation about the ongoing situation. This is not just about one person’s plight, but about the future of our country and the rights we deserve as Ugandans,” Kyagulanyi said. “We must continue to agitate for better, because we deserve better.”
Kyagulanyi’s call for unity comes amid growing concerns over Besigye’s health, which has reportedly worsened significantly during his detention.
During a recent visit to Luzira Prison, Kyagulanyi was denied access to Besigye, who was described as frail and in critical condition. According to Hajj Obed Lutale, who briefed Kyagulanyi on Besigye’s state, the veteran opposition leader even collapsed earlier in the day, despite continuing to demand his freedom and a fair trial in a civilian court.
Besigye, a long-time critic of the Ugandan government, has been vocal in calling for his trial to be moved to a civilian court, insisting that if the government has legitimate charges against him, they should be presented in a fair court of law. His continued detention without trial has sparked widespread outrage, with human rights groups and political activists decrying what they believe to be an unlawful and politically motivated imprisonment.
“Besigye’s health is worsening by the day, and it’s alarming that such a distinguished leader is being subjected to this treatment,” Kyagulanyi said. “We must continue to raise our voices for his freedom.”
The NUP president, a close ally and supporter of Besigye, vowed to continue advocating for his release, stating that the fight for Besigye’s freedom is far from over. He also emphasized that the struggle is not just for Besigye, but for all Ugandans who seek justice and fair treatment under the law.
“The struggle for Besigye’s release is not over. We will take every necessary step, including mobilizing fellow patriots and international communities, to ensure that his rights are respected,” Kyagulanyi added.
