In an unexpected twist on Valentine’s Day, a security guard in Wakiso District found himself at the center of a daring robbery. Joseph Ndamuwa, who had been entrusted with safeguarding his employer’s assets, allegedly took advantage of his position to steal a hefty Shs 79 million. His target: the money his employer was preparing to deposit at Standard Chartered Bank.
The crime took place at Mukaddwe Hardware, where Ndamuwa worked for Detailed Security Services. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire, the incident unfolded when Ndamuwa swiftly seized the cash from his employer and made his escape on a motorcycle, leaving everyone at the hardware store stunned and helpless.
Despite the brazen nature of the crime, Kasangati police were quick to respond. Acting on the information they had received, officers launched an intense pursuit that spanned several kilometers. The chase ended dramatically at Naalya Roundabout, where Ndamuwa was finally apprehended by law enforcement.
When he was arrested, police recovered Shs 70,545,000 from him, as well as a firearm with two rounds of ammunition. However, authorities are still working to locate the remainder of the stolen funds. Ndamuwa was transported to Kasangati Police Station, where he remains in custody as investigations continue.
“We are looking into the allegation and hoping to recover the remaining balance of what was reported stolen by the employer,” Owoyesigire commented. Though much of the stolen money was retrieved, the case serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities that can arise even within trusted professional relationships.
